The house edge is due to the zero pocket(s). All bets pay as if there were only 36 numbers on the wheel, but the zero gives the house its mathematical advantage. This is why the number of zeroes matters – and why European and French roulette offer significantly better odds than American roulette.

European Roulette
European Roulette is the most popular variant in the UK and the one we recommend for most players. The wheel has 37 pockets: numbers 1-36 plus a single zero. The house edge is 2.70% on all bets.

French Roulette
French Roulette uses the same 37-pocket wheel as European Roulette, but adds the La Partage rule: if you place an even-money bet (red/black, odd/even, high/low) and the ball lands on zero, you get half your stake back. Some French Roulette games also offer the En Prison rule as an alternative to La Partage. Instead of returning half your stake, your bet is “imprisoned” and carried over to the next spin.
